Take a look at this corner. It’s drab and normal. A place you rush to when you need to get stuff done quickly. Buy groceries or household goods or fix your car. Eat excellent Japanese food? Here? Yes.
Kanpai Japanese Restaurant
When you enter Kanpai, the atmosphere takes you away from the corner of suburbia into a clean, well-lighted watering hold on a Friday or weekend evening. Turns out, this place has been around for at least two decades. Located in western Chula Vista, this is really a gem. Here’s that they’ve got:
Already their specials scream delicious. When I visited, they offered fresh blue fin tuna. Their sushi & rolls include Nigiri, pressed sushi and house specials:
- caterpillar (eel roll topped with avocado),
- rainbow (California roll topped with assorted fish and avocado),
- dragon (shrimp tempura roll topped with avocado and eel) and
- deep-fried Philadelphia roll.
What is that? Chicken on a skewer, grilled spicy oysters, grilled mackerel. You get the point. It’s everything grilled and prices are reaonsable.
Udon & Soba
These are my favorite comfort food, especially in the winter. Their hot pot, Nabeyaki Udon, is just the kind of dish you want to have as we go into the holiday season.
Then there are the premium sake’s you can enjoy with your meal: either hot or cold. If you’re an aficionado of sake, you’ll understand the names: Hakkaisan, Katana Extra Dry, Kikusui Junmai and Otokoyama. They have their own special list of sakes. We tried the cold Hana Fuji Apple, which had a soft sweet taste.
If you don’t like the alcohol, definitely order the Sangaria Royal Milk Tea. It’s divine.
They have several desserts, but I suggest you end the meal with their green tea cheesecake. It’s will take you to heaven.
