San Diego Beach Rides: Equestrian Fun in the Tijuana River Valley

San Diego Beach Rides is a great way to enjoy the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park as well as Border Field State Park. Sure, you can buy your own horse, but I prefer just to rent one for an hour or two. For that, San Diego Beach Rides is perfect.

The ranch is near the ocean, so the weather is mild and they’re open all year round. They’ve created a little ghost town and have animals on the property to admire as well, including an alpaca:

They have about 35 horses and during the summer, some of them go to Pony Camp and Pony Land up the street.

The property is owned by historic rancher, Jim Martin. He leases the property to Jessica and Garret Winnie who own the business. They, in turn, hire 12 equestrian experts to take you out on the trails.

San Diego Beach Rides takes you around the 2 miles of trails in the river bottom. My trip included riding across the Tijuana River bed, which has been dry for decades, as well as the area that once was part of a military base, so scraps of concrete pepper the area.

There are also farms, which make up a mere 300 acres of land today. Several decades ago, farms and ranches stretched through more than 3,000 acres of the South Bay.

Along the ride, you can see a cross up on the mesas. It’s a commemoration of a Border Patrol female who backed up her car, started sliding down the hill and died.

You can also see a bevy of historic sites: crumbled farmhouses, ruins of a water tanks and old horse stables.

Horse back riding is extremely popular in these parts and if you’re a die-hard equestrian, you’ll want to touch base with the Tijuana River Valley Equestrian Association (trvea).

Trails exist along here, but there’s still no trail map. That’s why getting guides from SD Beach Rides is a good idea. If you want to explore as a hiker, check out my previous post about the trails.

Finally, if you enjoy a little more excitement, contact the San Ysidro Baika club of mountain bikers. You can join them for higher intensity fun.

Interesting story. Sounds like more fun than the places where you ride around a ring. Beautiful pictures.
