Stardust Donut Shop

Stardust Donut Shop along 698 Highway 75 in Imperial Beach (take Palm Avenue to the end) is a great place for surfers, skaters and bikers to catch a breakfast sugar high.

I’m not writing about this establishment in order for people to discover it. I’m writing about Stardust Donut Shop today to tell you that, yet again–in the South Bay–this place has not only been discovered, it’s famous.

When is it open? They say from 10am onwards, but the truth is, the owner opens when he opens. Get used to it. That’s part of the charm of this place. You can watch him make the donuts from behind the glass and he’s often in a foul mood. I know: you want to go to this place even more now.

There’s no place to sit. It’s been around since 1967 and the building does indeed look that old. Plus, the owner Cliff Arnold only makes a few batches a day, so you better hurry and wait because they’ll be gone. Once the donuts sell out, Arnold is done for the day. Try tomorrow.

But once you take a bite into this very very reasonably priced donut…. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Homemade, beautifully crafted, simple delight.

They’ve even gotten press from the Union Tribune and San Diego City Beat.

Address:  698 CA-75, Imperial Beach, CA 91932

There used to be a couple donut shops like that around where we live. I always figured they made and sold just enough to pay their bills and had no desire to work them selves to death.
