Ladies and gentlemen, you are welcome this Saturday only to travel back in time to the days of vaudeville and shock theatre with a full evening of entertainments. Be aroused by the burlesque performances of Remele, Trish tha Dish, and Gia La Dolce; be horrified at the plays detailing the psychology and the crimes of serial killers David Berkowitz, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Jack the Ripper. Be glad that the great tradition of Le Theatre du Grand-Guignol is alive and well at The Merrow in San Diego.
The show is written and produced by Remele Rusconi of The Bawdy Show and co-hosted by artist Lou Rusconi and Horrible Imaginings Film Festival and Podcast. This is the first show produced by Remele.
How did a sweet gal like Remele end up producing Grand Guignol? “I was talking with my husband about how L.A has lots of fun themed shows compared to San Diego. He said, ” We should do a Serial Killer Themed show.” I was like, ” ok…. let me wrap my brain around that one.” I’m very interested in Serial Killers because they are almost sub-human. Learning how killers pick their victims can help make you more aware of your surroundings.”
Remele has a lot of performance experience. “I was 36 when I found my calling to become a performer. The Bawdy Show was first produced by a big burlesque supporter named Lily Jackson. Lily produced three major holiday shows and felt she’d had enough. I was lucky enough to be in all three of those shows. I told her that Gia La Dolce and I wanted to start producing and she gave us the name The Bawdy Show. After being told I can produce a show on my own by my wonderful husband and talented artist Lou Rusconi, I finally listened to him and decided, ok let’s do it! Lou came up with the name for The Bawdy Show’s first show, Grand Guignol (Grahn-Geen-yol).”
The hosting partnership came about on a movie date night with husband Lou. “Lou and I went to see a movie at Digital Gym. That is where Miguel Rodriquez holds some showings for Horrible Imaginings film fest. We got to talking and Miguel said he would love to work with us on a fun idea. We wanted to mix burlesque and horror cinema together.”
Remele sketched out the concept and a narrative script, created complex soundtracks for three skits incorporating the voices of Berkowitz and Dahmer with hit songs of their eras that will never allow you to experience the tunes the same way again. After witnessing a few rehearsals, “Got To Give It Up” and “I Wanna Sex You Up” took on disturbing connotations. Then came the job of compiling a dream cast of gender bending performers, stripteasers, and actors. “I wanted this show to have a fun mix of talent. We have drag queens, one drag king, a few people who have some theater background and natural talent.” Included in the cast are steampunk-gal-about-town Velvet Ragdoll, Sammy Evil of Morbid Imagination Theater, burlesquer Miss Hell, artist Richard T. Reyes, actor Jr. Rivera, Sr. Donatella Soul of the San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, actor Michael Beck, drag superstars Bebe Gunn of Sinful Dames and Celeste W. Star.
